5 amazing underrated Greek islands

The Greek archipelago is formed of several thousand islands and islets, out of which only about 200 are inhabited. It is no wonder that some of the islands, overshadowed by the more popular and larger ones, go overlooked by both tourists and travel agencies. And with a cheapoair promo code, these islands are more affordable than they’ve ever been.

If you enjoy a more quiet holiday, far from the crowd, in a place of pristine beauty with an authentic Greek atmosphere, reconsider booking a holiday to Corfu or Crete and consider some of these lesser known islands instead.

1.Anafi

Anafi is a small island in the Cyclades, lying only 19 km east of Santorini. Along with Santorini, it is the only place in Europe with a dry desert climate. With a small population of less that 300 people, Anafi is a very quiet island. Its beautiful hills, numerous nature paths and secluded beaches, make Anafi a great island for hiking enthusiasts. Greek Mythology has it that the island of Anafi emerged from the sea when the Argonauts prayed to Apollo for a place to rest.

2.Nisyros

Nisyros is a volcanic island, part of the Dodecanese group, 50 km south of Kos. Nisyros is famous for its rocky beaches and  the still active volcano in its center, which is the youngest volcano in Greece. According to Greek mythology, Nisyros was formed when Poseidon, who was fighting the giant Polybotes, broke off a part of the Kos island with his trident and hurled it at his opponent. The body of the giant is said to now lay under the island of Nisyros.

3.Milos

Milos is a volcanic island north of the Sea of Crete, home to about 5000 inhabitants.  It is famous for the statue Venus of Milo, which was excavated here. Milos’ richness in obsidian made it an important trading  center in the Ancient Greek civilization. Due to its volcanic activity, Minos is rich in beautiful, unusual rock formations and numerous beaches with white sand.

4.Folegandros

Folegandros is a small island in the Cyclades group. Its geography consists of hills, large cliffs, and caves. The capital of the island, Chora, is built on a 200 m tall cliff, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean sea. Chora is considered to have some of the most beautiful and picturesque medieval buildings in the Greek Archipelago, rivaled in architectural beauty only by Santorini.

5.Antipaxos

Antipaxos is a tiny island only 4 km long, with a population of 30 people. It is located a mile away from Paxos, in the Ionian sea. Beautiful hillsides, olive groves and vineyards, beaches with white sand and turquoise waters, and its famous wine make Antipaxos one of the most romantic and idyllic place to visit in Greece.

If you are looking to spend this year’s holiday in Greece but would like to stay away from loud, crowded places, a secluded, idyllic Greek island might be ideal for you. From hiking paths and active volcanoes to white sandy beaches and medieval towns, the many islands of the Greek Archipelago have something unique to offer to every traveler.
